Yosef Lookout

Yosef Lookout

Yosef Lookout is on the summit of Mt. Gerizim, at an elevation of 881 meters above sea level. The lookout faces north toward Shechem and Yosef’s Tomb – which gives this site its name (in Arabic it is known as Tel a-Ras). This lookout became a popular tourism site as it is the closest location in sight of Yosef’s Tomb that is freely accessible during daylight hours. The view also includes Mt. Eval, Joshua’s altar and three of Israel’s borders: the Mediterranean Sea to the west, the Jordanian mountains to the east, and on clear days, Mt. Hermon to the north.

Large prayer assemblies were held here during the years when it was impossible to visit Yosef’s Tomb in Shechem.

Today the site is protected by an IDF outpost. In 2012 the lookout was renovated by the Shomron Local Council, which erected a guard rail around the perimeter, signposts and maps of the landscape.
